Martina Latimer ‘Chapter 2 - I and Thou - Notes to Self’
26 June - 28 June
'“Chapter 2- I and Thou - Notes to Self” investigates how positive human relationships, specifically our longing for love, hope, and forgiveness, can be visualized in a painting. Latimer offers a resting place for the viewer to connect and identify with uplifting emotions. This exhibition is a precursor to "I and Thou - Notes to Self" which will be held the QCA Project Gallery in September 2025.
Chapter 2 focuses on experimental process, as Latimer plays with the figurative elements in each painting, allowing the line work of human bodies to emerge from nature and landscapes. One of the primary influences for Latimers work is Njideka Akunyili Crosby. Crosby’s paintings often brings flowers and stories into the fabrics of her human subjects, and Latimer aims to subvert this relationship visually through layering. The posing and contortions of Latimers figures often relate to the genealogy and symbolism of the accompanying plant in each work. The plants are larger than life, painted in strong colors to underline their comforting presence. Latimer superimposes blossoms and leaves onto each other, pushing the detail of the veregation against the flat, graphic lines that make up each figure.
“I see my work as a celebration of the healing qualities of nature and of human beings.”
