Toyah Robinson ‘Reservoir of the Everyday’

20 November - 6 December

Toyah Robinson (b. 2001) is an emerging artist currently based in Magandjin (Queensland, Australia). She graduated from Queensland College of Art and Design in 2023 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in painting. Robinson’s practice focuses on the inherent interconnectedness between peoples lived experiences and space/place. She meticulously curates imagery of the everyday sourced from both public and private spheres. These elements are combined to create paintings that feel intimately familiar through refining, intensifying and reifying imagery and experiences that are already available to us in day-to-day life. Toyah Robinson’s work aims to act as a physical representation of the invisible string that connects people and to serve as a reminder to not only notice more in the everyday but to develop a deeper appreciation of it.

“Reservoir of the Everyday” is an amalgamation of elements in day-to-day life sourced from public and private spheres that have worked their way into my observational oil painting practice. This involves ‘private’ imagery including messy bedrooms, personal effects, and elements of my childhood home. Which is paired with imagery that is readily available to the public, such as stickers, signage, graffiti, and general ‘rubbish.’ This combination creates a body of work and space that feels familiar to the audience, and acts as a representation of the invisible string that connects us through common experiences, and our ability to notice and respond - albeit vastly differently - to stimuli in everyday life.
