Vyara Malcheva ‘Glow’

21 May - 24 May

The soft glow of the screen in my hand illuminates endless possibilities. My thumb taps on a small, familiar icon and images immediately appear. I don’t even notice how my thumb moves while my eyes absorb the endless feed, curated “especially” for me – to give me what I want or what the algorithm calculated to keep me looking. Yeah, I like these pictures… Oh, these people liked my post!... Ooh, that’s interesting,… my thumb quickly taps “like” and “follow”… In a rapidly evolving digital economy, we are surrounded by screens facilitating most of our social interactions. In search for information or gratification, we connect with ambiguous audiences, but we perform for the screen. Through images, we shape and share new digital identities.

The exhibition Glow is an uroboros riddle about what we give and what we get in this exchange of visual information on the flat, illuminated surfaces we love to touch. Drawing on process art, paintings and video mimic routines of producing, editing, and consuming visual information in a compulsive manner. Puzzling, abstract snatches allude to algorithms directing our feed, while tightly cropped parts of the body signpost hybrid, curated representations of the self. The dynamics between paintings and video projections separate and contrast the digital and physical experiences, often blurred in the glow of the screens that mediate our daily interactions.ervation, and a deep love for the untamed beauty that surrounds us. In essence, my art is a celebration of life's quiet moments, an offering of respite, and a reminder that even in the midst of chaos, nature's breath is a source of endless inspiration.”

Glow invites the viewer to take a step back, observe, and reflect on the effects of digitalization on our human interactions and experiences.
