Walter Stahl - Croqland

6 - 23 December 2023

After moving to Brisbane from Hamburg and taking up formal studies, Stahl started exhibiting and built a successful practice in experimental photo media. Parenthood and chancing upon two dilapidated, stuffed crocodiles re-focused Stahl’s practice on processing his day-to-day immigrant perspective, oscillating between blue-eyed tourist and almost-ethnographer, interpreting and describing life in his adopted homeland of 25 years.

Since 2013 Stahl has been involved with the 'Croqland Suite', focusing on Australian culture and his place in it, attempting to weave a contemporary mythology of Croqland through the metaphorical crocodilian lense, utilising installation, assemblage, video/performance, photo media and drawing/painting.

This mytho-poetic approach proved a suitable catalyst to integrate a number of lifelong interests, such as anthropology, mythology, cosmology and spirituality, as well as relevant aspects of science.
